"We all have the same hardware, but not the same software" compares to the novel with the characters being different, they are all humans, but with different minds. Like Penumbra is different than Corvina in their original decision of technology, Corvina being against it, and Penumbra being mainly for it. The Corvina wanted to preserve the founder’s image of the Unbroken Spine, so he didn’t want anything around when the founder was. Penumbra was excited when Clay figured out the novice puzzle, and wanted to solve the main puzzle, so he was for Google and technology. There is also differences between The Unbroken Spine itself and Penumbra’s store, Penumbra’s store became independent and still sold the non FLC books, while every other store only used FLC books, with exceptions. The Unbroken Spine’s stores are all FLC books. with music and other similar things.Everything in this novel is different, and that’s the same in life. There are the occasional knock-offs and reboots, but they have to have a bit of difference.

Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore Pre-Reading
The key to immortality is the ability to make something that lasts forever. To make it is the hardest thing to do, because maybe no one will know the thing that you’ve created, or maybe they will. If they do notice you, and if you do die, you will live on as the thing you’ve created.
Like books, games and other media are one of these things; they
can do wonders for anybody on a bad day, week, month, year, or decade. This
will mean something to them, which is the key to immortality, the ability to
bring one up when they are down.
The key to immortality is to run something that will become
something great that generations will remember. Like a company, or series. The
key to immortality is the ability to be remembered.
The key to immortality is a creation to run on your name in anyway
shape or form.
