House Of The Scorpion Post-Reading

"When he was young, he made a choice, like a tree does when it decides to grow one way or the other." This connects to the novel because of El Patrón, and the other Alacráns and even Tam Lin and María.

It connects to El Partón by telling that throughout his life, he was poorly treaten and still choses to kill Matt. Which would be killing himself, and he didn't care. It was like he was killing his brother. He could have chose to be nice and die when he was supposed to, like the grandfather.

It also connects to Fecelia by having her kill Furrball. Fecelia could've treated Matt like a regular human and not blamed it on Matt. She chose to and grow into that bad tree.

You could redeem yourself, like Tam Lin, who killed twenty kids, also saved Matt and Celia from death/eejit injection. He gave Matt valuable life advice, and treated him as any other human. He could've just been silent and let them be killed, but he didn't.

That is how this quote connects with the novel, through many of its own characters.
