Human Nature Essay

“There can be no high civility without deep morality” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson. Why then was the Red Baron, who was considered crazy and murderous on the British side, civilized normally? It’s because every villain has their own perspective. Many people have different moral standpoints like saving others before yourself, while someone else might have to hesitate, or not even do it. Humans are naturally moral or good.

Hero- "A hero is someone who has given his or her self to something bigger than oneself" -Joseph Campbell. Heroes put others before themselves, like Bender in the Futurama episode “Jurassic Bark” jumped into a pit of magma leading to the center of the Earth to save Seymore, his friend’s dog. Or Batman in the comic series called “Robin Rises” jumps into a suit that hurts him the more he uses it, but makes him stronger, and goes into a BoomTube that sends him to Apocalypse, a place which no mortal has ever came out of, and destroys an army, and punches the leader, Darkseid, and takes back his son, Damian Wayne, aka Robin, and makes it out and jabs a crystal into Damian and he comes back to life. “You stay, I go.... Superman…” ~the Iron Giant

“Enemies are just friends I haven’t made yet!” ~Wander. Villains can be looked at as heroes, like Darth Vader for example. In Revenge of the Sith, Anakin becomes a sith, but not because he showed hate in an outrageous way, but more of in a relatable way. In fact, he joined the sith to stop the killing and dying, “I won't lose you the way I lost my mother. I am becoming more powerful than any Jedi has ever dreamed of, and I'm doing it for you. To protect you.” ~Anakin to Pad’me. Or the Axe Thrower in Fire Emblem for the Gameboy Advanced. In the game there is a mission to protect a woman. She tells you that her husband is out getting money and the mission starts. Halfway through it you see an Axe Thrower and he breaks in, you are forced to move your character to him and talk. He tells you that he needs to do this job for his wife. Your character realizes it is the woman you’re protecting’s husband and he joins your team to get back at his leader who lied to him. Or Elie in Night, he does kill his father, kind of, but to save himself, there wasn’t much he could do, so he saved himself, instead of letting himself die too. Or Rick in the season 2 premiere of Rick and Morty titled “A Rickle In Time”, the universe splits due to uncertainty, Morty’s sister makes it out, but Morty and Rick can’t because Morty’s collar is broken, and he falls through a void and Rick, ( who is an antihero, he is one of the protagonists, but he always does something really bad i.e. enslave two races, one to power his car, and the other to make one weapon for him),  jumps in after Morty, gives Morty his collar and is stuck in the void, “I’m okay with this, be good Morty, be better than me”.  ~Rick to God in his last plea for life. “A moral system valid for all is basically immoral.” ~Nietzsche

Trustworthy-”Worthy of trust or confidence in”. Trusting is one thing humans do immediately when not being watched or judged. For example in Brain Games they had an experiment where they had four pairs and told them if they both chose split they get to split it equally, if they both chose steal they get nothing, and if one steals and the other splits, the one who steals gets all the money. Seven out of the eight people chose to split the money. There is a chemical in the body that gets released when you get rewarded, like a well placed trust, this chemical is called dopamine. This is why there are addictions. Without this humans wouldn’t be rewarded with excitement or surprises,  we would be neutral, leaning towards evil. Probably even in a moral crisis. “Always do what is right. It will gratify half of mankind and astound the other.” ~Mark Twain

People are naturally good because of rewards, bravery, and different viewpoints on morals. Without these things morals would no longer exist. “There can be no high civility without deep morality” ~Ralph Waldo Emerson.

  1. You had phenomenal details on your examples and they were very fun to read, but you used to many details and I felt that the main point was taken away from those.

  2. Your over all point was great but it was really hard to make out what you were saying in the paragraphs. It was really cool and kinda helpful you used all those examples from different tv shows. All in all it was a good essay but really hard to understand.

  3. This essay is clever in the sense that you saw the situation differentlythan everyone else. Rather than based on what the villain would do you based it off of how the villain saw himself as a person. I like how you used quotes from historical figures. It is good that you related your points to what you like such as entertainment, although you may have gone a little bit overboard with the references. You also could put a little more detail into your main points and the Brain Games situation. Also I liked how you related the topic to the biology of the human body.

  4. I love the amount of detail that you provided, but agree with Ian; it might almost be too much without elaboration. Many times I felt like you were just listing your support without fully explaining what you meant. The quotes were wonderful as well, but they also need to be connected to your main point. You have great thoughts, just organize them a little more in the future. Grade: 82%
